Elena’s exploration of spirituality and human connection also extends to her From the Outside Looking In series. This collection of mixed-media collages was born from Diadenko’s personal experience of navigating the complex realities of religion and race. Growing up in the former Soviet Union, religion was forbidden, but the concept of equality among races and nationalities was deeply ingrained in her. However, upon arriving in America, Diadenko was confronted with the stark contradiction of religious individuals who treated others unfairly based on race. This contradiction inspired her to create a series of works that would address issues of inequality, prejudice, and spirituality.
For the From the Outside Looking In series, Diadenko conducted interviews with over 200 people of different backgrounds, incorporating their words and experiences into her mixed-media collages. By weaving together these voices, Diadenko created a platform for dialogue on the themes of inequality and human connection. Her work emphasizes her core belief that, in the eyes of God, all people are equal, regardless of race, religion, or background. The series challenges viewers to reflect on the prejudices and divisions that exist within society and encourages them to consider the possibility of unity and equality in a world too often defined by difference.
